Small heroic deed - big impact: The "Drawer Heroes"

In Germany, around 210 million of old cell phones are lying around unused in households, potentially representing a valuable resource. For this reason, we decided to support the " Drawer Heroes" project, which was set up by well-known companies and associations in the Düsseldorf area to collect as many of these cell phones as possible.

How does it work?

  • Knowledge transfer: The project helps people build up knowledge in jobs with a promising future. Netztechnik Schiffmann, a specialist in the field of smartphone remanufacturing and recycling, supports the transfer of know-how for people who already have similar jobs at Caritas.
  • Remanufacturing: Together, teams from Caritas and Netztechnik Schiffmann collect the phones from participating companies and check whether they can be remanufactured. After a certified data erasure, smartphones that are still usable are cleaned and brought up to date.
  • Recycling: Cell phones that cannot be remanufactured are recycled in a certified process. This not only allows important raw materials to be reused, but also generates revenue. These are made available to a Düsseldorf project of immediate survival assistance.
  • Digital participation: Refurbished smartphones return to the cycle and become real heroes! They enable people to participate digitally - and thus also to access social benefits, because many official processes in Germany have been digitized. The German “Jobcenter” and Caritas distribute the refurbished phones to needy people from precarious financial backgrounds.

And for a few days now, our colleagues from BEKO TECHNOLOGIES have been searching not only in drawers, but also in basements, attics, sofa nooks and under beds for old cell phones that they can donate - for several good causes at once. We are happy to be part of this important project and to make a small contribution to sustainability and social justice.
